Music as therapy and healing: With his second release Antepartum, Detroit musician Jeff VanNieulande uses the sonic canvas as a tool to process and explore the complex emotions surrounding the birth of his son. Featuring instrumental guitars, synths and a myriad of other instrumentation, Antepartum contains dreamy, if not uneasy, soundscapes that seeks to express layered feelings both positive and negative.

“When my wife was pregnant with our first child, she was at the doctor’s office for a routine test when suddenly everything escalated and she went to the hospital. We were told she would not be able to go home and that she had to be taken to Antepartum, an area of the hospital where women stayed while waiting to give birth. These songs are a reflection on that difficult time - the frightening uncertainty joined with the boring days and distant hums of hospital machinery. My son was eventually born, premature but happy and healthy. I wanted to create this album to process this strange time, but also as a tribute to my wife, who went through so much for the sake of our family. Her heart is so full of love and her strength and determination is a constant inspiration. My love for her cannot be fully expressed through music or words, but I hope that this album can serve as a heartfelt tribute to her and all she went through during that time and everything she’s given of herself for the sake of our family.”
